Farm Maintenance will work in the day to day operations of the farms.  Duties could include field preparation, planting, cultivating, harvesting, and hauling seed and grain.  The Farm Maintenance position will work with operating, monitoring, maintenance, and small repairs of pivot irrigation systems. Other tasks such as cleaning out grain elevators, fixing fence and minor mechanical work will also be required.  The Farm Maintenance position will also be involved in haying operations, including cutting, raking, and baling.  Knowledge of pivot irrigation systems and some mechanical knowledge is preferred.  Class A CDL beneficial.  Assume other duties as assigned.

I run at least one combine and also hire custom harvesters. Trimble gps guidance is used for all operations except combining.
Experience doing all these operations is not required but the ability and willingness to learn is.

Plum Thicket Farms is looking for someone to head the farming enterprise of our diversified operation. We farm 2300 acres, 540 acres of which are under pivot irrigation. We also run approximately 280 mother cows. We follow only no-till farming practices, including incorporating cover crops and multi-species forage crops into our crop rotations. We strive for an eleven month grazing program by utilizing crop residue and dry land forage crops in addition to our native range. The employee must have mechanical skills as he will be responsible for routine maintenance of all equipment as well as the three irrigation pivots. He will be responsible for planting/drilling all of the crops as well as fertilizer applications. He will also manage irrigation and chemigation applications on the pivots. Someone with experience with sprayers and herbicide application will command a higher salary as will someone with the ability to scout crops.  Most of the crops will be custom harvested. However, the employee must have or be willing to get a CDL, a pesticide applicator license, and a chemigation permit.
Someone familiar with no-till farming practices would be preferred. Although a degree in agronomy, range science, or animal science would be helpful, a college degree is not absolutely required. However, experience running machinery is. Above all, the employee must be open to new ideas and have a willingness to learn.
When there is a lull in the farming activities, the employee will help build and maintain high tensile fence or set up temporary electric fencing for high intensity grazing. He may help with moving cattle or processing them through the chute. During the winter, he will help keep livestock water open, feed cattle, or move snow if necessary. He will work on getting equipment ready for the next season in our well- equipped shop.
The salary is negotiable depending on the employee's level of experience, education, and ability; however , it will be an excellent salary for this part of the world where the cost of living is quite low. We will provide accident insurance and two weeks of paid vacation.

Interns that work during the spring calving season, may be involved with working with cow/calf herd management, heifer development, maternal herd management, terminal herd management, and feedlot/backgrounding yard operations. Interns may also assist with electronic identification, artificial insemination, and records management. All interns will receive an introduction to range management and ranch financial management.
