Horticulture Students Put Skills To Use

Curtis, Ne, May 2, 2007: - Knowledge is power, but putting that knowledge into action can be even more powerful.  A prime example of this is the recent landscape installation done by the NCTA Horticulture students at the Curtis Medical Center.

According to Jay Turnbull, Horticulture Instructor, the medical center staff requested a landscape design and estimate from the students.  Students James Kumke, Casey Roy, and Kendra Pierce  collaborated together on a design that aimed to enhance the facility.

"This was a fantastic learning opportunity at every phase," stated Turnbull.  "Not only did the students visualize the design, but they also worked hand in hand with an outside contractor to complete the irrigation installation as well."  The final phase completed by the students was the planting of plants grown in the NCTA greenhouse.  Turnbull also added, "The facility now has a colorful appeal that will vary throughout the seasons, adding beauty to the community."

This landscape installation is a great example of the partnership between NCTA and the city of Curtis.  For more information about the NCTA Horticulture Program, please contact Alan Zuk, Horticulture Department Chairperson, at azuk2@unl.edu or NCTA at 1-800-3CURTIS.
