Dean's Council Minutes Thursday, October 1, 2015

Attendees

Ron Rosati, Scott Mickelsen, Glenn Jackson, Eric Reed, Brad Ramsdale, Dottie Evans, Doug Smith (absent), Barb Berg (absent), Jennifer McConville, Mary Rittenhouse, Catherine Hauptman (recorder)

The NCTA Dean’s Council Meeting was called to order at 12:03 p.m. with the above referenced individuals in attendance.

 WELCOME

  • Jennifer McConville welcomed everyone to the meeting. Ron joined later on.

 APPROVE MEETING MINUTES FROM 9/24/2015

  • Glenn moved to approve the minutes as written, Mary 2nd, motion carried.

 DUAL CREDIT POLICY

  • Ron reviewed the updated dual credit policy with the Dean’s council members.
  • Comments were made about having training for dual credit instructors. This has been done once this summer with some of our instructors.  Scott is in charge of this.
  • Dual credit courses will not be a part of faculty workload, only in circumstances where they do not have a fulltime load.
  • Glenn moved to approve the Dual Credit policy as written, all were in favor, and motion carries.
  • Catherine will get this to Dottie and on the NCTA website.

 EMERGENCY PLAN

  • Dean’s council reviewed the current emergency plan
  • The emergency plan was reviewed and the amendments include, changing the document to include practice drills, change the name of the housing director, add cell phone numbers (on internal document only), and create and internal and external document.

o  The emergency plan practice drill will be put on the agenda for Executive Staff.

  • Jennifer moved to approve the Emergency Plan as amended, Glenn 2nd, motion carried.

 EVENT FORMS

  • Jennifer would like everyone to be conscious of giving 20 day notice of an event that needs food ordered.

 ACCREDITATION UPDATE

  • Jennifer handed the Dean’s council the new guidelines for determining qualified faculty through HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation and Assumed Practices.
  • Mary asked Dottie how this effects any of our current faculty
  • Most of our classes taught at NCTA are considered occupation courses and only General Education are not.
  • The guidelines give NCTA time to comply if we have any issues with faculty being qualified to teach.  The deadline is September 2017.
  • Ron however would like to see us operating by their parameters by next semester.
  • The third party notices have all gone out for comments for our upcoming Accreditation visit.
  • On the 13th  of October Dottie has invited someone from UNK, Dr. Kenya Taylor, to come to the NCTA campus.
  • Dr. Taylor will meet with the Deans, go on a tour of our campus, meet with our accreditation team, and help NCTA walk through the site visit.
  • The purpose of her visit is to have her understand what we do at our college.
  • The hosts for the accreditation visit have not been determined yet.
  • This agenda item will continue to be on our Dean’s council agenda.

 DIVISION SPLIT

  • Ron discussed the Ag Production System (APS) division split
  • Currently it is at the system level at UNL.
    • The system has asked up to only consider not using divisions
    • They would like us to possibly put a proposal forward to eliminate our divisions and have programs.
    • The Dean’s council members present did not have any concerns with the possible change of wording form division to programs.
    • This agenda item will be brought back to next week’s agenda items when our division Chairs are all present.

 RURAL FUTURES CONFERENCE

  • Information for the upcoming Rural Futures Conference on campus was distributed to each Dean’s council member
  • Ron encouraged members to have their students sign up for the conference.
  • This agenda item will continue to be on our Dean’s council agenda.

 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

  • Time did not allow discussion on the 50th anniversary discussion that will be held on the NCTA campus November 13th.
  • This agenda item will continue to be on our Dean’s council agenda.

 AG HALL KEYS

  • Scott reminded Dean’s council members that the key for Ag Hall unlocks the door to use the scantron machine in the Ed Center. If you do not have this key then you need to speak to Randi Houghtelling about getting one.

 DEAN’S COUNCIL MEETINGS FOR SPRING 2015

  • Ron asked Dean’s council members to block out two hours once a week on their schedules for Dean’s council. He wanted them to consider some possible times that they would be able to do this and bring back to next week’s Dean’s council
NCTA CALENDAR OF EVENTS
  • Ron reviewed NCTA’s calendar of events with the Dean’s council.

 OTHER BUSINESS

  • Jennifer handed each Dean’s council member the updated budget process forms and deadlines. She asked them to review and bring back comments to next week Dean’s council. .

 The Dean’s Council adjourned at 1:00 PM. The next meeting will be Thursday, October 8th  , at 12:00 p.m.
