Aggie Rodeo team headed to doubleheader in Iowa

Curtis, Neb. – Two rodeo contests in Iowa on Sept. 29-Oct. 2 are on tap for the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Rodeo Team.

In their third and fourth official collegiate contests of the 2016-2017 season the Aggies have nine athletes on the traveling team, said Taylor Rossenbach, rodeo coach.

“Eleven teams compete at Fort Dodge in a rodeo hosted by Iowa Central Community College on Thursday and Friday, then to Ames at Iowa State University,” Rossenbach said. “The NCTA Aggies are working hard and we are looking forward a great weekend.”

The women’s team is led by Lexus Kelsch of McLaughlin, S.D., who leads current standings for barrel racing among the 11 colleges in the Great Plains Region.  She and her horse, Tigger, placed fifth nationally last season.  The women’s team is sitting third regionally.

Leading the men’s team is steer wrestler Brock Henry of Rushville, currently seventh in the Great Plains Region.

Recent Aggie results have been:

University of Wisconsin, River Falls:  In barrels, Kelsch was 2nd in the long round and 2nd in average.  Henry won the long round and was 6th in the average in steer wrestling.

Mid Plains Community College, North Platte:  Kelsch won 1st in barrels winning both the long and short go-rounds. Henry placed 10th in long go and 10th in the average in steer wrestling.

Aggie Rodeo Club members include:  Trevor Ginkens, Harrison, president, tie down roping and team roping; Nate Letcher, Hay Springs, vice president, team roping; Lexus Kelsch, McLaughlin, S.D., barrels; Cash Talamantez, Lisco, tie down roping and team roping; Tom Percival, Oxford, team roping; Tara Spatz, Trotwood, Ohio, secretary-treasurer, breakaway roping; Erica Mowery, Middleburg, Penn., barrels; Brock Henry, Rushville, steer wrestling; and Chase Corbin, Mason City, barebacks.

NCTA’s team is part of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association which competes among more than 100 teams from 2-year and 4-year colleges.  NCTA is in the Great Plains Region of the 11 NIRA regions. Student athletes compete in events of saddle bronc riding, bare back riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and goat tying.
