Week #1 of the fall semester is in the books!

By now, the students at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture are settled into their class schedules and residential accommodations here on campus or in the community.

Throughout the fall semester, one of our many goals is to provide educational experiences and enriching opportunities for students. We can do that on a small campus as we can be flexible in our planning.

Three unique opportunities occurred in week #1, and more are coming up later this week.

Dean’s Message by Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

Summer classes began Monday at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.  Welcome back to our Veterinary Technology community who comprise the on-campus courses.

While few college students have been milling about campus the past month, things have certainly not been quiet.

In fact, it seems to have been a whirlwind of activities and events since late May when the summer day camps and sessions began.  We appreciate the public partnerships for these successful programs.

Hamburgers and all the fixings are on the menu Thursday in Curtis for a community appreciation meal hosted by the NCTA Collegiate Cattlemen club.

“The purpose of the ‘Feed the Farmers & Ranchers’ meal is to serve the community, socialize with agricultural producers and include them in our event here at the NCTA campus,” said Cassidy Frey, president of Collegiate Cattlemen.

NCTA Dean’s Message by Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

When I officially started my first day as the new dean of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture on June 15, 2020, our nation’s higher education system faced great unknowns.

We knew, however, that NCTA at Curtis was the only campus in the University of Nebraska system operating with in-person classes that summer. Two dozen Veterinary Technician students and their instructors were ready for opening day, also on June 15.

A college scholarship in honor of a longtime Sandhills ranch couple is helping a Burwell student achieve her career goals.

Jaylee Lynn DeGroff received the Jim and Helen Gran Scholarship to the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture through the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation in 2021.

The $1,200 scholarship from NCF and the Grans, who had ranched near Gordon, helped DeGroff with tuition and college expenses last fall during her third and last semester at NCTA.

Do the “Big Four” meat packers in the U.S. have a monopoly on the cattle industry?

“If you ask Nebraska producers, the answer is typically yes,” says James Lee.

Lee is a second-year Ag Business major at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. He also farms and ranches with his family near Sutherland.

He invites the public to attend a meeting on Tuesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at NCTA to learn about Sustainable Beef LLC, a producer-initiated company proposing to build a packing plant near North Platte.

Aggies at home on the range

NCTA Dean’s Message by Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

In this year of limited rainfall and parched conditions among many areas of Nebraska, livestock owners and grasslands managers are keeping a watchful eye on pasture and range conditions.

Measures to consider include early weaning to stretch feed supplies and maintain cattle health. Input costs keep climbing, making every management decision more crucial.

Dean's Message

By NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

May is National Beef Month, a time of recognizing beef cattle production and the healthy, nutritious product many of us consider a staple in our diet.

A tip of the cowboy hat to all cattle producers, families, and employees from all of us at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. We appreciate your dedication to the livestock industry.

At the NCTA farm, we have completed spring calving and branding, and are preparing to turn out the cow-calf pairs on to summer range.
