Three Times Out....Three Top Ten Finishes
The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture's Livestock Judging Team started their first set of competitions from Wednesday, October 22-Tuesday, October 28. The freshmen team competed at the Oklahoma State Mock Contest in Stillwater, Oklahoma; Buck Cattle Contest in Madill Oklahoma, and the Louisiana State Fair Contest in Shreveport Louisiana.
The team consisting of Katie Brown, Richard Froning, Caleb Jensen, Tyler Foland, Morgan Glause, and Ben Canfield placed in the top ten as a team at all three competitions. At Oklahoma State Mock Contest Ben Canfield was 11th in placings, Morgan Glause was 14th in placings, and Richard Froning was 15th in placing, the team stood 3rd overall in placings. At the Buck Cattle Competition the team was 1st in team placings, and 3rd in oral reasons with a final standing of third overall. The largest competition the attended was the Louisiana State Fair Competition with 89 freshmen competing in the division. The team had a very solid day placing 7th in the cattle division, 8th in the sheep division, 6th in swine division, and 6th in the overall awards standing. Individually placing Morgan Glause was 10th in cattle and 12th high individual overall; Caleb Jensen was 7th in the sheep division; Richard Froning was 15th overall; Ben Canfield was 20th overall.
The freshmen's next competitions will be in December 12-13th at the Northern Exposure Cattle Contest in Stillwater, Oklahoma and the Express Ranches Competition in Yukon, Oklahoma.
Meet The Coach
Ryan Stainbrook joins the NCTA faculty as the 6th coach of the Aggie Livestock Judging team. Ryan grew up in East Central Kansas, on a diversified crop and livestock operation. In high school, Ryan was a member of the 1998 Reserve National Champion FFA livestock Judging Team. His family was involved in showing livestock and has made the sale at the American Royal, Kansas Junior Livestock Show, and the Kansas State Fair. After high school Ryan attended Northeastern Oklahoma A & M in Miami, Oklahoma and was a member of a highly competitive team in the junior college ranks. Ryan completed his Associates of Science in Agriculture and moved to Manhattan, Kansas and finished with a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science. At Kansas State, Ryan was a member of the 2004 Reserve National Champion Senior College Livestock Judging Team. Currently he is finishing his Masters work through The University of Nebraska in Ag Leadership with a minor in Animal Science.
Ryan's coaching career although short has proved to be very successful. Ryan's first position was at Clarendon College in Clarendon, Texas. In his one year appointment as Assistant Coach his team finished in the top in ten 15 Contests, top five in 2 Competitions and 1 contest win. From there Ryan accepted the position at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas. At Colby Community College Ryan had 5 teams finish in the top ten and 1 contest win. Ryan accepted the position as Livestock Judging Coach at NCTA in the fall of 2008. In the short time Ryan has been at Curtest he has taken teams to 4 competitions and has 3 top ten finishes, 2 of which were in the top 5.
"My goals for this institution are to improve on the tradition of excellence in which the state of Nebraska exhibits. The work ethic, values, and dedication that the youth of this state demonstrate are a true testament of the pure potential this state has at greatness.
