Veterinary Technician Internship Opportunity

The Audubon-Manning Veterinary Clinic (AMVC) has two main components: a traditional mixed animal veterinary service as well as a comprehensive swine management business. There are nine veterinarians here who do various functions. Four vets work out of the management office doing exclusively swine medicine. In veterinary services there are four mixed animal vets doing predominantly large animal work plus one veterinarian who specializes in small animal medicine. AMVC is located about 80 miles east of Omaha. Our main clinic is in Audubon, IA and the satellite facility is in Manning. Both are towns of approximately 2,000 people with good hospitals and schools and numerous housing possibilities. We own a house in Audubon that might be available for student use.

We could accommodate one student at a time in veterinary services. The intern will have opportunity to work with all types of animals, but we could "track" individuals toward large or small animal work if necessary. While we expect the intern to function as a full-fledged team member (contribute!), we do understand that it is also a learning process and are happy to explain processes in detail. We host many veterinary students each year, so our clients are accustomed to seeing new faces periodically.

Founded in 1983, the Center is a nonprofit wildlife hospital and education program that connects people to wildlife through rehabilitation, education and research to preserve our wild heritage. Our ultimate goal is not just to save injured animals, but also to prevent them from being injured. We do this through first-hand education. By using the medical process of caring for wild animals as a vehicle for reconnecting people to wildlife and nature, we expect to create fundamental change.

Our premise is simple in order to preserve wildlife and the environment, people must develop a feeling of familiarity and ownership that leads to a sense of responsibility to take action. The route to creating ownership is first-hand exposure and real life experiences. By witnessing first hand the damage caused to wildlife by human activity and by participating in the care of wildlife to right these wrongs, people become knowledgeable stewards, empowered to take action.

What it means to be a wildlife intern:
Internship responsibilities are broad and demanding. All skills are taught to the students by a full-time, on staff veterinarian and 2 certified veterinary technologists. Interns are considered part of the working staff; they are directly involved, under supervision, with animal cases. The instruction is skill-oriented and focused on veterinary biology and natural history. Interns learn, among other things, blood sampling techniques, physical restraint techniques, basic diagnostic and therapeutics, and physical exams for a variety of animal species (primarily avians, reptiles, and mammals).

Interns are responsible for dietary design and preparation, cleaning, husbandry, administration of medications, assisting with medical and surgical procedures, maintaining medical records, hospital and cage maintenance, and release of patients into appropriate habitats. In addition interns are also invited to help deliver educational programs to elementary and secondary students.

Interns are provided with reading materials and classroom seminars in medicine, environmental public health, habitat protection, wildlife management and ethics, basic comparative anatomy and physiology, wildlife identification, wildlife and medical procedures, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Internships are variable in length and are free of charge. Housing is available on a limited basis to out-of-state residents and those in state students whose permanent addresses are west of Worcester, MA for a fee of $50 a week.

Students can expect that weekly time demands range between 40-60 hours a week. Although this is a rigorous internship, staff and Center attitudes are friendly, informal, helpful, and appreciative.

For detailed information on the application process, to read our internship FAQ or to learn more about the Center please log onto our website www.newildlife.com .

After reading all the information submit your application to the above address. If accepted you will be required to provide copies of your rabies and tetanus vaccination information.

This is a job posting for either graduates or as an internship. The job is part time and seasonal. If a student has weekend free ansd is from Grand Island, Lincoln, or Columbus this may be the perfect opportunity. Not meant to be a full time permanent job. I have a couple of techs who supplement their income by working for us every year. Weekend work, even one shift a week works for many students. Great experience for a young technician that is interested in horses and horse work.

JOIN THE NATIONS LARGEST ANIMAL HEALTH EMERGENCY RESPONSE ORGANIZATION TODAY

The USDA NAHERC program is a national animal reserve emergency corp. that is comprised of Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO), Animal Health Technicians and Veterinary Medical Students (AHT) assimilated into an elite cadre within Emergency Management response community.
The National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC) started in 2001 protects public health by providing a ready reserve of private and State veterinarians and veterinarian technicians to combat threats to U.S. livestock and poultry in the event of a large outbreak of an exotic or foreign animal disease. NAHERC staff can be activated and supplement existing USDA-APHIS employees for periods of 3 weeks for domestic deployments or 30 days for international deployments. These positions are paid upon activation of the NAHERC.
However, during a disaster, the size and scope of an incident can easily overwhelm conventional local animal health resources and could be devastating to the Cattle, Beef and Dairy industries. The NAHERC is an Emergency Response organization designed to provide large scale federal assistance during an animal event. Previously NAHERC was activated and responded to the 2001 UK FMD outbreak, the 2003 Newcastle outbreak in California and the 2002 LPAI in Virginia. When an animal health emergency occurs, an immediate response is necessary to protect both animals and people in support of the National Response Plan and Essential Support Function #11.

To qualify, NAHERC members must meet all qualification requirements at the time of application.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Veterinary Medical Officer - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).
