Plum Thicket Farms is seeking a summer intern for 2012. We are a diversified operation, running 350 cows and farming 2300 acres. We calve in May while the cows are on annual rye, and have an eleven and a half month grazing system. The student would be exposed to the tail end of calving.
He/She would also be exposed to three different AI synchronization systems and will learn how to handle semen. Because we have a rotational grazing system and have range monitoring sites in all of our pastures, the student will participate in reading those sites and will become familiar with native plant species.
The student will also become familiar with no-till farming and learn what the issues are in planning crop rotations as well as fertilization and chemical programs. He/she will also learn about irrigation management using new technologies like water mark sensors and evaop-transpiration monitors.
We use the Cow-Calf 5 cow record system and have individual records from birth to the rail on all of our cattle. The records are used extensively to make breeding and culling decisions.
The intern will be expected to take part in the weekly management meetings and will be encouraged to join the discussions. Duties will include helping with calving and breeding, fixing fence, building high tensile fence, moving cattle, chute work, sprayer support and harvest support. If they don't know how to ride, they will by the end of the summer.
Continuing education is very important to us and we try to participate in as many opportunities as possible. The student will attend all the meetings we do. The hours are long but I believe that we can offer the student a valuable adjunct to their education.

I am Josh Armstrong. I have trained reined horses at Armstrong Equine Services in La Mesa, New Mexico (www.ArmstrongEquine.com) for 24 years. I am in need of an assistant trainer. We do a number of things and I am good at telling people what to do, so this position could be a fit for people from various backgrounds. Our concentration is on Reining and Cowhorse, although we compete in all of the AQHA events except driving.
My primary immediate need is for someone to work young horses toward Western Pleasure and Trail type activities, to give lessons, and to take customers to local shows.
My Dad, Dr. Joe Armstrong, runs a breeding operation out of the same facility. We employ a full-time stall cleaner and feeder, a full-time groomer, and a long-time office administrator. We stand NRHA Futurity Champion Von Reminic and work with some very nice horses.
We typically start between 6:30 and 7:00, knock off for lunch between Noon and 12:30, start back between 1:30 and 2:00, and quit between 5:00 and 5:30, Monday through Saturday. We basically work horses all day every day except for when a customer wants to schedule a lesson or when maintenance chores need to be done.
I will be happy to help the applicant secure housing in the area and pay will be commensurate with experience.
