Horticulture Mission Statement
Horticulture seeks to fulfill the NCTA mission by providing students with opportunities to learn and apply employable skills in the field of Horticulture. It is the department goal to promote professional development through curriculum and extra-curricular activities while cultivating citizenship, community involvement and global awareness.
Horticulture Assessment Plan
Student Performance Assessment
• The Horticulture Department will measure and document the success rates of graduates and transfer students. Acceptance into four year programs, employment, placement in the military, and entrepreneurship initiatives will be closely monitored.
Curriculum and Program Assessment
• The Horticulture Department will make recommendations and seek and document input from faculty and students on a regular basis regarding programs in the department.
• The Horticulture Department will adjust curriculum based on industry, market, or best practice trends to meet evolving horticulture standards.
Student Input into the Assessment
•The Horticulture Department and NCTA will ensure the evaluation of every course by every student enrolled. Evaluations will be reviewed by the Dean and Department Head each semester to ensure course relevance, rigor and competence.
• The Horticulture Department will conduct exit surveys of graduating students and immediately review results.
• The Horticulture Department will survey alumni every five years to track success, review alumni feedback, calibrate suggestions, and identify program standings.
University of Nebraska Assessment
•The Horticulture Department will meet annually with the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture and Natural Resources with regard to articulation.
• The Horticulture Department will monitor research and program initiatives in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources
• The Horticulture Department will participate in curriculum outreach activities through the University of Nebraska and ensure processes are in line with best practices
Peer Institution Assessment
• The Horticulture Department will monitor programs at peer institutions and liaison with other vocational, two year, and four year institutions that offer related coursework on an annual basis.
• The Horticulture Department will periodically survey via the internet or trade magazines, Horticulture programs to review emerging programs and initiatives.
Industry Assessment
• The Horticulture Department will survey and document employers who hire NCTA graduates at approximately three year intervals.
• The Horticulture Department will participate in Advisory Board conferences and seek out employer participation in the NCTA Horticulture Program
• The Horticulture Department will visit and document regional employers to assess and survey program outcomes and reputation.
