In a team-based environment, the Animal Technician II provides humane care and treatment to a variety of animals used in research and teaching. Responsibilities include but not limited to: proper handling and/or restraint techniques for different species as well as the sanitation procedures critical to the well being of the animals housed within various animal facilities; provide daily animal observation and report any health concern, abnormality, behavior change and/or mortality according to Standard Operating Procedures designed to provide optimum animal care according to Federal and State regulations and guidelines; supply food and water to animals on a daily basis, as well as maintaining clean animal cages; handle animals with unique housing requirements; maintain animal breeding colonies and record keeping.

Technicians will be expected to work with barrier and containment systems that require accurate and thorough work to prevent contamination. Technicians will deal with a varied clientele on a regular basis (research staff, management, co-workers, etc.) while demonstrating a professional demeanor at all times.

A work schedule of 5 days/week, which may include weekends, is anticipated but overtime and working on days off may be necessary. This position is covered under the provisions of the contract college benefits programs.

Required Qualifications:

Formal training beyond a high school diploma of 6 months-1 year; 1-2 years of animal care training and/or animal care facility experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Patience and compassion for animals and their well being. Ability to lift more than 50 pounds (handling bulk supplies, such as feed and bedding), and to transport (pushing or pulling) numerous cages/racks throughout animal facility. Must have a valid driver's license. Dependability is essential. Training in basic animal care procedures, record keeping, recognizing health concerns in various species essential. Appointment to this position is subject to a pre-employment physical exam, and the testing and immunizations that are required based on specific job duties.

Preferred:

AAS Degree in Veterinary Technology preferred. AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Certification preferred or eligible.
