Job Summary: Assist with field and laboratory research on insect pests in West Central Nebraska. Assistants will travel to field sites to collect insects and plants from crop fields (such as corn, soybean, wheat, sorghum) under the direction of a supervisor. Field work will make up the majority of tasks and may include digging up soil and plant roots, collecting corn ears, or scouting and counting insect pests. Lab work will include processing soil samples, washing and examining corn roots, measuring insect damage on plants, and counting small insects using a microscope.

Required Qualifications: Willingness to work outdoors under harsh conditions (i.e. hot and humid corn fields), pay attention to detail, and follow directions provided by supervisors. Physical ability to use shovels for digging soil, carry samples, and walk/crouch/kneel in crop fields. Ability to work and communicate as a part of the research team is very important. Must be at least 18 years old, have a valid US driver’s license, and be able to pass a criminal background and driving record check.  Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work long hours that may begin early in the morning.  Will not exceed 40 hours/week but likely will work more than 8 hours on some days.

Preferred Qualifications: UNL, NCTA, or other college students, particularly those with an interest in entomology, ecology, agriculture, or integrated pest management are encouraged to apply.

Details: Up to 40 hours/week from approximately early May-mid August, 2018. Minimum pay is $10.00/hour with increases for those with entomology or agricultural experience.
