Summary The Irrigation Specialist III works with the Farm Manager and Agronomist to effectively manage and optimize irrigation of approximately 1,600 acres of ground for potatoes annually. 
ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you will:
  • Maintain a record of and execute the irrigation schedule as efficiently as possible.
  • Maintain irrigation equipment, repairing as needed and alerting the Farm Manager of major malfunctions.
  • Assist in always maintaining proper moisture levels by verifying:
    • All irrigation systems are installed in a way that hold the irrigation pattern described in the irrigation plan.
      • All planted areas have proper coverage, including the overlap, for optimum germination and growth.
      • Sprinkler units, metering devices and pressure gauges on the system are functional.
      • Use and maintain all recommended personal protection equipment (PPE)
      • Collect and record data as required.
      • Start chemigation on prescribed schedules.
      • Perform winter preventative maintenance of irrigation systems.
      • Assist with winter-time capital improvement projects such as pipeline installations, electrical/communications installations, replacement pivots, and facility modifications.
      • Provide input for long term planning.
      • Other duties as assigned.
 Physical Demands
  • Work outdoors in the elements.
  • Walk across uneven surfaces in fields and outdoor work areas continuously.
  • Climb stairs and ladders occasionally.
  • Work at heights up to 25 feet
    • Frequently lift and carry 10 lbs.
    • Occasionally lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
    • Stand for extended periods of time.
    • Occasionally bend, reach, reach above shoulders, squat, kneel for 15 minutes, push or pull up to 50 lbs., twist/rotate arm, wrist and torso, and crawl 20 feet.
    • Typical, daily farm hours are 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
    • Irrigation seasons are busy and may require longer hours and weekends.

Expected Hours of Work

 

Required Qualifications

  • A valid US driver’s license or the ability to obtain one and pass vehicle insurance verification.
  • At least one year of experience operating and maintaining irrigation systems.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate degree in agriculture, electromechanical, electrical, or instrumentation and controls programming or related field
  • 4+ years’ experience with irrigation programs including center pivot irrigation.
  • Electrical knowledge to troubleshoot and repair irrigation and chemigation equipment.
    • Previous experience with hydraulic valves and pilot systems for pressure regulation, pressure sustaining, flow control and on/off configurations.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in operating electronic devices as they relate to irrigation telemetry control.
    • Ability to work extended hours as needed during irrigation season.
      • Willingness to assist other farm teams for extended hours as required for planting, harvest and shipping.
      • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as: boom truck, loader, telehandler, backhoe, dump truck, forklift, excavator, road graders
      • Self-directed, yet consensus driven, with the ability to implement solutions with team input.
