Position Title: Pen Checker - Horse Position

Job Description:
This person will be responsible for:
- Riding assigned pens daily as scheduled, excluding extreme weather conditions.
- Being accountable for cattle health in assigned pens by detecting sick or injured cattle.
- Properly diagnosing cattle through mail or radio contact with Cattle Health team and pulling cattle to the adjacent hospital pen.
- Sorting cattle, including removing withdrawal cattle according to sales schedule, wrong penners, and mixed pens.
- Moving cattle within the feedyard.
- Gathering loose cattle and taking them to their appropriate pens.
- Checking water tanks to ensure functionality.
- Utilizing animal health reports and interpreting the data to support decisions.
- Reporting vet pen and general pen maintenance to Pen Checking Team Lead or Supervisor.
- Communicating problematic pens with leadership immediately.
- Calling in moralities and animals for euthanasia to the Cattle Health team.
- Ensuring holding pens around the processing facilities are emptied daily.
- Ensuring general care for your horses (i.e. shoeing, vaccinations, feeding).
- Maintaining and cleaning your area (i.e. tack, run, water tanks, hay feeders) within the facility, including the break room.
- Assisting in other areas of cattle production, including but not limited to Cattle Logistics, Cattle Distribution, and East Lot.
Qualifications or Skills Required:
Ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
- Cattle handling knowledge and experience.
- Intermediate to advanced horsemanship skills.
- Knowledge of sick or injured cattle, including basic animal health diagnosis.
- Punctual.
- Must be team-oriented.
- High attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Feedlot, sale barn, and/or ranch experience is preferred.
- Beef Quality Assurance experience.
- Commitment to safety and quality culture.
This position requires:
- Individual must provide, shoe, and maintain three (3) head of horses and pass ADAMS pre-employment horse evaluation and diagnosis test.
- Individual must be able to work holidays, extended hours, and weekends as scheduled.
- Individual must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, if needed.
- Exerting 50-100 pounds of force occasionally. Sitting, lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling, and reaching/handling/grasping frequently; standing, walking, carrying, bending, twisting, climbing, and crawling occasionally; stairs and kneeling/crouching rarely.
Compensation includes $425 per month in horse pay.
