Summer camps, trainings underway at NCTA

Now that graduation and spring semester coursework is in the books we set our sights on the summer phase of education at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

The pace changes at NCTA while the majority of faculty are on a 9-month schedule and not officially on campus until mid-August.

Although the pace lessens at times, our priority of providing quality educational programming continues. Five academic division chairpersons continue their year-round responsibilities and curriculum planning.

Fulltime staff in the departments of business, administration, recruiting, admissions, security, facilities, food service and NCTA farm laboratory, all continue their workload as well.

Second-year students in veterinary technology will be returning for summer session June 13 to August 5, which means a campus residence hall and food services are open as well.

We welcome students and guests back to campus for a variety of summer camps, short courses and training sessions. Also during the summer, we host new student registration and continue to host tours and campus visits for prospective students.

This week, livestock and animal science programs take center stage as Dr. Doug Smith and the 2016-2017 livestock judging team members (veteran sophomores and incoming freshmen) are hosting their inaugural Standard of Excellence Livestock Judging Camp May 25-26. The livestock judging camp is for 8 to 18-year-olds and includes an overnight stay in an NCTA dormitory.

Also this week is the annual West Central Animal Science Field Day. The daylong program on Thursday begins at 9 a.m. and includes hands-on learning activities for youth interested in production livestock, nutrition, science, sheep shearing and evaluation of wool.

Animal Science Field Day is hosted by Frontier County and Nebraska Extension, and NCTA. Welcome to Curtis, animal science students and hosts!

Next week, NCTA will be welcoming a new employee, Ryan Bauman, as residence hall manager. The college joins the City of Curtis in hosting two summer interns for a two-month Community Serviceship Program. These summer interns, Jamie and Courtney, arrive next week, as well.

May each of you have a safe and tribute-filled Memorial Day. Thank you to the many veterans in our midst and to the families of those individuals who have served our country with honor and dignity. They are not forgotten. Our American Legion will be hosting several ceremonies on Memorial Day, and I hope you will participate in one of these salutes to those who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
