The Jacobson Farm and Ranch is a family run operation in northwestern North Dakota, 15 miles north of Watford City. We farm and run around 300 black angus/black sim x cows and 100 yearling heifers. Some years we also run some yearling steers. It is all depending on spring moisture and pasture conditions.
Our family operation consists of Duane and Judy Jacobson. Our son Brett works with us. Brett and Melissa have two children. Our other son Arlen has his own electrical business, but when needed or if he can make it, he will be available. Arlen and Chelsea and 1 daughter.
The heifers start calving March 10th with the cows following after April 1st. Calving is done by May 30th and branding happens the end of May. Branding is done with a hydraulic calf table and cattle work is done with ATVs. There is the possibility to attend neighbors’ brandings. We’re planning to AI heifers the first of June. We AI the cows the middle of June and embryo implants the first of July.
Farming begins the end of April. We are a no till operation and what we plant depends on the weather and land conditions. Generally we grow oat hay, barley hay, durum, corn, (silage and seed). Haying typically starts the end of June and is pretty steady for 3 weeks. Grain harvest typically begins mid-August.
We want to make it an enjoyable experience. We are always open to new ideas and input from someone with a different perspective. Thank you.
We will consider someone with no experience. Jobs that you can expect include: haying, checking cattle, hauling out salt and mineral, fencing, and working cattle. Tractor driving experience would be appreciated. We run newer John Deere equipment.
Paid internship will run from May till August with flexible start and end dates. Housing consists of a nice, private, furnished older farmhouse with high speed Internet, washer, dryer and air conditioning. Lunch and supper will be provided with breakfast being on your own. Some meals may be in a lunch box or on a tailgate. We are looking for one student but we would consider hiring two friends if they were both good candidates. Deadline to apply is April 1st. Position maybe filled sooner if qualified applicant is found before deadline.
We try to take Sundays off. We will do our best to allow you some free time other days as well. The hours can certainly vary depending on what season we are in. With our dry climate we do some haying at night or early mornings to take advantage of the dew.
