CURTIS, Neb. – Know the difference between a funnel cloud and tornado?

The National Weather Service will present a free public seminar Monday evening in Curtis for individuals interested in becoming weather spotters.

The session will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at NCTA.

Volunteers, area residents and the campus community at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis are invited to attend the SKYWARN® Spotter training class, said Jennifer McConville, NCTA associate dean.

“The free training will provide essential information for all types of weather hazards,” McConville said, “but primarily we are preparing for how the Curtis community can prepare for, and respond to, severe weather for individual and public safety.”

The NWS SKYWARN® program will include:

  • Basics of thunderstorm development
  • Fundamentals of storm structure
  • Identifying potential severe weather features
  • Information to report for public safety
  • How to report information
  • Basic severe weather safety

There is no cost to attend, and light snacks will be available, McConville said.

Additional information about the training and schedule is available from the National Weather Service at:
