CURTIS, Neb. – An appreciation burger feed for emergency services and law enforcement personnel kicked off the opening week of college preparations in Curtis on Monday.

Early-arrival students and college staff with the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture hosted an appreciation picnic at the Curtis fire hall for community volunteers.

Among guests were the Curtis Volunteer Fire Department, Frontier County emergency medical services (ambulance), and the Frontier County Sheriff’s office.

“We wanted to show our appreciation and thank the people who protect and assist our students and the entire campus community,” said Jennifer McConville, NCTA associate dean.

The effort was spearheaded by the burger chef Kevin Martin of Curtis, NCTA Student Services advisor.

“We thought Kevin made a great suggestion to gather emergency personnel before classes start next Monday,” McConville said. “These wonderful volunteers are critically important to the NCTA community.”

The evening also gave the new 2018-19 Residence Assistants who oversee student life in campus housing the chance to renew acquaintances with Curtis emergency responders.

The campus staff and RA team work closely in coordinating NCTA campus security plans, emergency service by fire and medical response, and law enforcement programs for public safety.

Martin took a few minutes from grilling burgers to address the group of volunteers while they ate.

“We just want you to know we are thankful for all you have done for NCTA the past year,” Martin said during a break from his chef duties.

“A campus like ours relies on the help of volunteers for these types of services. We want you to know we recognize that, and we appreciate all you do.”
