CURTIS, Neb. - The annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month Extravaganza sponsored by the NCTA Collegiate Cattlemen Club is Thursday.

Races featuring horses and riders will begin at 7 p.m. at the indoor arena of the Livestock Teaching Center on the campus of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

The event draws college students to ride horseback or compete in races without breaking their cargo, in this case water balloons balanced within the rider’s clothing.

Their goal is to raise funds for breast cancer research and awareness, said Meredith Cable, assistant professor of animal science and the Collegiate Cattlemen sponsor.

A popular event is open to the public.  Admission is $2.00 for spectators and $5.00 for contestants.

Participating riders are required to have their horses immunized and health paperwork cleared by Joanna Hergenreder, associate professor, before entering the campus. Also, students must first have completed the NCTA Equine Safety class.

All proceeds go to the annual international health campaign which is annually observed in the month of October.

Pink ribbons symbolize breast cancer prevention, screening, research and awareness programs.
