NCTA Student Senate is this week’s Aggie Highlight. Learn about this group’s purpose and what they are involved in an update from Sarah Campbell, president of NCTA Student Senate.

What is NCTA Student Senate, and who are the members? How many members do you have?

NCTA Student Senate is a group of students from various teams and clubs across NCTA who together act as a voice for the student body. Our goal is to improve campus life for students and to gain leadership and communication skills through this governing body. All teams and clubs nominate a first- and second- year student to represent them in Student Senate. We currently have about 30 members.

The clubs and teams involved in Student Senate include STVMA (Student Technicians of Veterinary Medicine Association), Safari Club, Rodeo Team, Ranch Horse Team, Women in Ag, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Collegiate FFA/4-H, Stock Dog Team, Agribusiness Club, Shooting Sports Team, Livestock Judging Team, Collegiate Cattlemen, and Crops Judging Team.

When and where does the club meet?

We meet in Ag Hall every first and third Thursday of the month.

Who are the student officers?

Sarah Campbell is the president, James Lee serves as vice president, Aubrey Kelley is secretary, Nicole Wright is treasurer, and Macy Zentner and Ayden Long are our Dean's Council representatives for Student Senate.

Describe some of the activities and what they entail – contests, service, education, fundraising, etc.?

With current COVID-19 precautions we have been unable to plan many events, community services, or fundraisers. With that being said, one constant has been the Student Senate spotlights! Our Student of the Month and Faculty/Staff of the Month are people nominated by classmates and staff for being exceptional. We find pride and joy in highlighting positivity on the NCTA campus. Also, we are currently planning a finals week "brain break" event for December 1 at 7:00 P.M. in The Barn. We're hoping to have board games, holiday activities, and hot cocoa for NCTA students!

Who is the faculty or staff sponsor of Student Senate?

Eric Reed is the faculty advisor for NCTA Student Senate.

What is a highlight of your time on Student Senate?

My first year serving on Student Senate we started the NCTA Student of the Week. It was my special project, and I found so much joy interviewing students. As a freshman at NCTA it was a great way to put myself out there, learn more about my classmates, and spread some positivity!

How do students get involved with Student Senate and who can they contact with questions?

To get involved, students must be nominated by their team/club to serve as their representative. Talk to your team/club president! If this is something that interests you, we would love to have you! For questions regarding Student Senate you can contact Sarah Campbell, president, at scampbell24@unl.edu or Eric Reed, faculty advisor.
