NCTA Community Forum is Sunday

CURTIS, Neb. – Curtis residents and partners of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture are invited Sunday afternoon for a public forum with the intended next president of the University of Nebraska.

The 3 p.m. NCTA Community Forum and reception with Admiral Walter “Ted” Carter Jr.,  retired superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, will be at the auditorium of the Nebraska Agriculture Industry Education Center, near Siminoe Avenue and University Road.

University of Nebraska Regent Bob Phares of North Platte will host Carter’s visit to campus, said NCTA interim dean Kelly Bruns, Ph.D.

“We are honored to welcome Admiral Carter to Curtis and demonstrate the hands-on learning and statewide mission of NCTA for delivering agriculture and veterinary technology programs in Nebraska,” said Bruns, who also is director of NU’s West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte.

Regent Phares and Dr. Bruns will host Carter at WCREC in North Platte on Monday for a community forum from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Carter was named Friday by the Board of Regents as its priority candidate to become NU’s eighth president.

He is a retired vice admiral in the U.S. Navy, is the immediate past superintendent of his alma mater, the U.S. Naval Academy; a former president of the U.S. Naval War College; and a Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star recipient.

Carter was unanimously supported by both the Board and the 23-member Presidential Search Advisory Committee that represented faculty, students, staff, business, agriculture and other university constituencies.  Regent Jim Pillen of Columbus chaired the search efforts.

The Rhode Island native and resident of Suffolk, Virginia, is traveling to University campuses and its facilities during a 30-day public review period.

Afterward, if it deems appropriate, the Board will vote on Carter’s appointment as president-elect.
