Curtis, Neb. – Skills of man and canine will be on trial this weekend in Curtis.

Efficient and low-stress livestock handling will be April 1-2 in a dog trial hosted by the Outback Stock Dog Association and Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Stock Dog Club.

Events will be in the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center indoor arena beginning with a handlers’ meeting at 8:30 a.m. and contest at 9 a.m. daily.

Spectators are encouraged to attend and see what a stock dog trial is all about, said NCTA Stock Dog Club President Kayla Reynolds of Litchfield, Nebraska. The club vice president became president last month when President Sheila Reichmuth left for her 8-week internship.

Reynolds shows an 11-month-old pup, Dex, who she is training herself.  The dog has made significant advancements in its obedience and stock handling skills, she said.

The NCTA club receives great support from the Outback Association which is based in the Curtis area, and hosts nightly practices at the farm of Kelly Popp, president, or at the Frontier County Fairgrounds in Stockville.

In conjunction with the Saturday trial, the Outback Stock Dog Association will be hosting its annual meeting at noon.

The NCTA student club has reorganized for 2017-2018 with Reynolds as president, Jolene Chmelik, Grangeville, Idaho, vice president; Kalli Hilker, Cambridge, secretary; and Brooke Blower, Arnold, treasurer.

Officers for 2016-2017 were Sheila Reichmuth, Leigh, president, Reynolds, vice president; Kendra Rader, Grand Island, secretary; and Haley Pollak, Seward, treasurer.

Additional information on the weekend stock dog trial is available from Popp at (308) 367-7127, or from NCTA Stock Dog Club Advisor Judy Bowmaster-Cole at 1-800-3CURTIS.
