Stock judgers compete at CSU

Animal science students hailing from three central Nebraska towns led their collegiate livestock judging team at a recent contest.

The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture team was second in placings and fifth overall at the Colorado State University Classic in Fort Collins last weekend.

Peyton McCord of Cairo led the NCTA Aggies with first in class placings and tenth overall when scores for the livestock classes were tallied with oral reasons for the placings.

Will Moeller of Grand Island was third in placings and 23rd overall, while teammate Grant Romshek of Shelby was 22nd in overall points.

The Aggie team also was third in sheep and goats evaluation, fifth in swine judging, ninth in beef evaluation and ninth in oral reasons, said Coach Doug Smith, NCTA animal science professor.

 Team members are second-year students at NCTA in Curtis. Individual results were:

  • Payton McCord, Cairo, 1st in class placings, 10th high overall judge, 10th beef cattle and swine, and 21st in sheep and goats.
  • Grant Romshek, Shelby, 11th in sheep and goats, 22nd in beef and overall judging.
  • Will Moeller, Grand Island, 3rd in placings, 23rd overall, 15th in sheep and goats, and 18th in swine.
  • Remy Mansour, Petaluma, California, 16th in sheep and goats.

The freshman team also competed and was 12th place overall, 9th ninth in swine, 10th in sheep and goats, 10th in oral reasons, and 12th in beef.
