Aggie students in Curtis know how to keep their eyes on the prize.

The Aggie Trap Club at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis will hand out some pork at the “Bring Home the Bacon Trap and 5-Stand Shoot” on Dec. 3.

All sports enthusiasts are invited to join in the fun match at the Curtis Gun Club, says Rilee VanDonge, NCTA trap club president.

“This is an important activity for our students, the Curtis community and sportsmen from around the region to support the collegiate trap team,” said VanDonge, a sophomore veterinary technology student from Holton, Kan. “I hope everybody comes, ready for some competitive action.”

The “Bacon Match” will be a fundraiser to support the club’s costs for ammunition, supplies and travel to several contests in Nebraska each semester, said Coach Alan Taylor, an area businessman who also is an NCTA adjunct instructor for animal science (nutrition).

“Shotgun sports require a substantial amount of personal time and money for the team to practice, travel and compete,” Coach Taylor said. “The students provide all their own ammunition which amounts to thousands of dollars during the school year. Students with the club love their sport and all the work they do is very much appreciated.”

The NCTA club received grants in 2015 from the National Rifle Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation to purchase firearms, clay targets and target throwers. The City of Curtis and NCTA also helped with start-up funding for improvements to the Curtis Gun Club facilities where the team practices twice weekly.

“I am very pleased with the students’ commitment to the Aggie Shooting team,” Taylor said. “They put in many hours in both practice and competitions.

The Dec. 3 match will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Curtis Gun Club, east Highway 23. Laird Feed of Gothenburg is a Bacon Match co-sponsor with the NCTA Aggie Trap Club.

The team’s next contest is March 11-12 in Lincoln where Midland University of Fremont hosts the “Ice Out” competition.
