McCOOK, Neb. — The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) Ranch Horse Team successfully hosted its 11th Annual Punchy In Pink Spring Round Up April 2–5 at Kiplinger Arena in McCook, delivering a weekend that blended high-level competition, meaningful cause-driven impact, and hands-on student learning.
Part of the Slidin Daze Series, the event featured a full slate of AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse, Stock Horse (including Collegiate), and Ranching Heritage Challenge classes, drawing competitors and spectators from across the region.
More than just a competition, the event continues to serve as a cornerstone experiential learning opportunity for NCTA students. Members of the Ranch Horse Team were responsible for planning, organizing, and producing the multi-day event—gaining real-world experience in event management, communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
“This is what learning looks like for our students,” said Coach Joanna Hergenreder. “They’re not just participating—they’re producing something real, working alongside industry professionals, and building skills they will carry directly into their careers.”
Elevating the Experience with NCTA Cattle
A highlight of this year’s event was the use of NCTA-raised cattle, which elevated both the competition and the educational value of the weekend. The cattle were praised for their quality—athletic, challenging, and consistent—providing an excellent experience for competitors while showcasing the strength of NCTA’s animal science, beef, and farm and ranch management programs.
The addition created a more fully integrated, “from the ground up” learning experience for students, connecting classroom knowledge to real-world application in a highly visible setting.
Alumni Engagement Strengthens Industry Connections
This year’s event also reflected the strength of the NCTA network, with multiple alumni returning in meaningful roles.
Damian Wellman served as cow boss, managing cattle flow and organizing sets throughout the weekend. His presence provided students with the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced professional in a high-pressure, real-time environment.
Alumni entrepreneurs were also represented, including: Mariah Christiansen, owner of MC Horses & Tack, who sponsored multiple awards and operated a vendor booth; and Angie Worth, who brought her wildrag business to the event.
These interactions created valuable networking opportunities for current students, allowing them to build relationships with industry professionals while gaining insight into career pathways within the equine and agricultural industries.
Supporting a Greater Cause
The Punchy In Pink event continues its mission of giving back, with proceeds supporting WRCA’s Punchy In Pink initiative, which provides assistance to women in ranching affected by breast cancer. Contributions included a donation from each entry and proceeds from the event’s fan-favorite Bra Race.
A Signature NCTA Experience
The Punchy In Pink Spring Round Up represents what NCTA does best—combining technical skill development, industry engagement, and community impact into a single, immersive learning experience.
For the students of the NCTA Ranch Horse Team, the weekend was more than a show—it was an opportunity to step into professional roles, represent their college, and build the confidence, connections, and capabilities that define their future in agriculture.
