Job Description
- We calve in May and June. So you may get to be involved with tagging and recording birth data as well as grafting (putting an orphan calf on a foster dam), pairing out on horseback, and sorting heavies. We do use four wheelers and side by sides but prefer horses for any sorting and moving that needs to be done. Neighbors that calve earlier in the year have their brandings in May. These are neighbor affairs, everyone gets together to get the job done and enjoys a fantastic meal afterwards. Our branding will be in June.
We use a rotational grazing system so cattle will need to be moved from pasture to pasture, this is often done with ATVs. Cattle health needs to be frequently checked in conjunction with putting out salt and mineral and checking water.
Haying is comprised of swathing, raking, baling, and hauling the bales to the stackyard. Depending on the weather, haying can be done June through September but we try to do most of it in July and August. You will likely get some tractor driving experience including basic maintenance of machinery.
Later in the summer we synchronize all the cows and replacement heifers and artificially inseminate (AI) at a set time. If you have AI experience you will get to breed some cows. You will leave with a deeper understanding of the bovine estrus cycle and synchronization protocols.
Fence is a source of pride on the Nielson Ranch. You will learn how to build and repair barbwire fence.
We get excited when our young people are excited. If there is something you are really passionate about or would like to learn more about we will strive to help you do that in any way possible.
We love what we do and think of it not as a job or occupation but as a lifestyle. In the summer when the daylight hours are long so are our days. A day typically starts at 7 am (but may start as early as 4 am on a branding or AIing day) and often does not end until dark. We try not to work on Sundays but this is a 6 days a week job and if cattle need fed, calving cows need checked, or hay needs baled you may be required on a Sunday. Housing is provided. The majority of meals will be your own responsibility.
