Reflections on the Year of 2021 bring to mind many wonderful connections our Aggie campus has forged among families and individuals.
Thousands of graduates from the high school and college years who studied and lived “up on the hill” remain connected to Curtis.
We at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture hear from them throughout the year, at reunions, for special occasions, and when alumni bring their children here to attend college.

NCTA Dean’s Message by Larry Gossen, Ph.D.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I love this time of year, starting the Monday before Thanksgiving until the day or two after the new year begins. It’s my favorite holiday season because regardless of one’s background, religious beliefs, or family traditions, there are always times to celebrate.
If you will indulge my ramblings, I’d like to just share a few of my random thoughts from this time of year.

Week Number 16 concluded last Friday. But who’s counting?
All of us, I’m quite sure. The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture campus will be rather empty after the typical liveliness of the fall semester.
Final projects and exams wrapped up in the past week, with semester grades turned in by the end of this week.
It’s been another challenging, yet successful, semester for our Aggie students. They didn’t quit when times got tough with health concerns or obstacles that are a part of life.

Stock dog contest to honor longtime coaches Thursday, December 9, 2021

College students, alumni and the stock dog community will pay tribute this week to dedicated mentors and friends of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.
The Kelly Popp Memorial Stock Dog Trial is Saturday and Sunday at the indoor arena of the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center in Curtis, Nebraska.

Stehlik wins national teaching award Tuesday, December 7, 2021

Dan Stehlik is a lifelong learner and educator.
The Dorchester, Nebraska native and Curtis resident has taken what he’s learned as a farmer, livestock producer and teacher in Kansas and Nebraska, and applied his “learning by doing” philosophy to 29 years of high school and college agricultural programs.
Stehlik approaches academic instruction with a ‘we’ attitude in that ‘we all learn’ together.

Aggie field trip views irrigation system Tuesday, December 7, 2021

Nebraska water issues and irrigation management are some of the leading topics in Brad Ramsdale’s college classroom.
After all, many crops need consistent water supply for top yields. Nearly 8.6 million acres of Nebraska's cropland are irrigated by surface gravity flow or pressurized irrigation systems.
Ramsdale is the agronomy professor who teaches an irrigation management course, coaches the Aggie Crop Judging Team, and is also faculty sponsor for Collegiate Farm Bureau at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.

Success breeds success Tuesday, December 7, 2021

I love to eat. Let me be more specific. I love to eat good food. While there are many types of food I do NOT care for, I do love Cajun food.
So, when I had the chance last week to go to New Orleans for a national conference, I started dreaming about all the Cajun delicacies I would have the chance to try out. I was not disappointed.

It’s great to look up in the stands of a sporting event and see family, friends and the community cheering us on. Who doesn’t appreciate a fan club?
I was a student athlete (and a coach, a short time) decades ago, and it was motivating to know there was a booster club, pep band or family to cheer from the sidelines or in the gymnasium.
Take the collegiate setting this Fall season for Aggies representing the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Ranch Horse Aggies ride in fall finale Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Collegiate riders aboard experienced and young horses, alike, are setting goals and gaining experience in the ranch horse arena.
Training and riding either their own horse or a borrowed mount, Aggie students on the NCTA Ranch Horse Team, recently competed in a two-day season finale at Torrington, Wyoming.
Four of the eight Aggies from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture team were introduced to their first collegiate show.

With this week of Thanksgiving, I reflect on the many blessings of the past year for family, our Aggie family at NCTA, and this small, rural community of Curtis that has been my home for the past year and a half.
We are so very fortunate to be a part of this close-knit community in Frontier County.
I am thankful for the blessing of Curtis, the community of people who give, time and time again, in support of our students and faculty.
