Josi Arnold is a listener, friend, mentor, problem-solver, and includer.

Her advocacy on behalf of college students was noteworthy throughout 2020, particularly due to the global pandemic.

Arnold’s appreciative supervisors at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture took note.

They’d worked closely with Arnold, who has been the NCTA Dean’s Office administrative associate since early 2020.

Aggies at home on the range

NCTA Dean’s Message by Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

In this year of limited rainfall and parched conditions among many areas of Nebraska, livestock owners and grasslands managers are keeping a watchful eye on pasture and range conditions.

Measures to consider include early weaning to stretch feed supplies and maintain cattle health. Input costs keep climbing, making every management decision more crucial.

Connecting at fairs and reunions Thursday, July 29, 2021

Dean’s Message by NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

Everyone loves a county or state fair!

Exhibits, animals, contests, food, carnivals, games, and often a concert, rodeo or ranch rodeo that fill the bleachers or grandstand.

Frontier County is heading into fair week in two locations, Stockville and Eustis. The two fairs are a longstanding tradition.

Dean’s Message by NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

This week we have a summer progress report about students, field crops and livestock at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Experiential Learning opportunities are integral to supporting agricultural careers. Our NCTA farm and ranch, faculty, and “ranch crew” enables hands-on learning by youth and adults.

College courses for Aggie students plus University of Nebraska resources which target 4-H, FFA, schools, and Nebraska Extension help all of us in equipping students for successful and rewarding careers.

Aggies on the recruiting trail Wednesday, July 14, 2021

Dean’s Message by NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

July is the start of county fairs across Nebraska, often mixed with concerts and rodeos.

Summer activities that begin at the family farm or ranch often are the result of months of hard work by a 4-H’er or FFA member. Or, in the case of rodeo, the entire family engaged in nightly practices and travels to junior or high school rodeos.

Youth in the field navigate to new heights Wednesday, July 14, 2021

By NCTA News and Nebraska Extension Frontier County

Use of drones for crop management and weed control was a highlight at the 5th Annual Agronomy Youth Field Day in Curtis.

Twenty youth and four adults gained new perspectives and knowledge both in the field and indoors at the soils laboratory of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

One of the most popular sessions for youth was out at the campus farm, where a drone flew over a field to assess crop health. Later, the older youth could pilot the drone through an obstacle course.

Dean’s Message by NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

Welcome to July, with a busy kickoff to recruiting and outreach from the NCTA campus.

It’s been a whirlwind of conversations and campus visits at the end of June, several key to NCTA’s academic and administrative progress. I’d like to share notes for readers.

Aggies convene in Curtis

Loyal graduates and friends of the “Curtis Aggies” high school and college alumni showed up for Aggie Alumni Day on June 26, surpassing attendance goals for organizers.

“We had a terrific turnout to help our alumni celebrate 108 years in Curtis,” said David Fulton of Pleasanton. “Everyone really seemed to enjoy the daytime event, and a chance to get out and socialize again on campus.”

Reflections from Aggie Alumni Day Wednesday, June 30, 2021

Dean’s Message by NCTA Dean Larry Gossen, Ph.D.

As I enjoy this period of below normal temperatures, daily chances of rain, and sunny days, I wonder where the month of June has gone. Here we are sitting at the halfway point through 2021 and it causes me to ponder.

Aggie Alumni Day

Last weekend we had the privilege of hosting over 100 NSA, NSTA, UNSTA and NCTA alumni on campus for our Aggie Alumni Day. What a great turnout, and everything went so well.
