University of Nebraska receives $1.5 million Hayes County ranch for education, research and outreach

CURTIS, Neb. - The University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis announced Thursday the university has received a gift of 2,147 acres of ranchland in northeast Hayes County.

David Scholz and his late wife Sande Clark Scholz made the gift valued at nearly $1.5 million through the University of Nebraska Foundation for education and research purposes.

PTK honor society inducts 26 Aggies Wednesday, May 5, 2021

Twenty-six students were inducted Wednesday as members into the Alpha Iota Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Curtis.

Initiates gathered with current PTK members for the annual candle-lighting installation ceremony at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Since classes during May 2020 were remote, the group represents initiates from 2020 and 2021.

The academic honorary recognizes academic achievements of students attending a two-year college. It provides opportunities for growth and development through honors, leadership and service.

Dean's Message

We observe commencement Thursday for our Class of 2021 of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

In many regards, our academic programs have been full speed ahead with in-person classes throughout the fall and spring semester. However, this group of graduates saw some personal and college tests unlike any before seen by those passing under the Aggie arches near Ag Hall.

Youth livestock judging camp is May 26-27 Wednesday, May 5, 2021

CURTIS, Neb. – Youth ages 8 to 18 are invited to learn more about livestock judging at the 2021 Standard of Excellence Livestock Judging Camp at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

NCTA Livestock Team members and coach Dr. Doug Smith will conduct the camp on May 26, with participants encouraged to also participate in the Animal Science Discovery Day on May 27.

Participants may stay overnight at an NCTA Residence Hall on Wednesday evening, said Dr. Smith.

Two Jurgens Scholars at NCTA Tuesday, May 4, 2021

CURTIS, Neb. – NCTA Aggie students Macy Zentner of Cedar Rapids and Vanessa Herrera of Lexington have completed their spring semester at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

Earlier this semester, each received a $1,000 Glenn Jurgens Memorial Scholarship for 2020-2021, in honor of Professor Jurgens who taught at NCTA and its predecessor institutions of UNSTA and UNSA.

NCTA’s semester concludes this week with graduation on May 6.

Zentner and Herrera are sophomores who will be returning to NCTA next fall and are set to graduate in 2022.

Let’s celebrate the Earth this week, Arbor Day in Nebraska, and our role in responsible stewardship of natural resources.

Appropriately, the campus of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture is ideally suited to the vocation of agricultural production and conservation.

The community of Curtis shares appreciation of our beautiful NCTA campus, which now is greening up, thanks to some timely rains and, yes, even light snow.

Stock horse riders win rich experiences Tuesday, April 27, 2021

Competing at a national ranch horse contest over the weekend at Amarillo, Texas, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Addison Villwok and her filly, Luna.

“Amarillo, Texas did not disappoint!” says the Randolph, Nebraska native.

“For me, personally, it was an all-around amazing experience and to ride the filly that I have built through the NCTA training program at one of the largest collegiate horse shows was a new level of awesomeness.”

NCTA graduation May 6 is outdoor ceremony Tuesday, April 27, 2021

The public and Curtis community are invited to attend the Class of 2021 Graduation of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture on Thursday, May 6 at an outdoor ceremony at campus.

Nearly 50 graduates have indicated they will participate in the 1:30 p.m. ceremony which will be held on the old football field south of Ag Hall, said Jennifer McConville, NCTA associate dean.

Social distancing is encouraged. Facial masks are not required outdoors with distancing.

The Aggie Shotgun Sports Team from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis competed last month at national championships in Austin, Texas.

Our Aggie team had a fine experience at a national match.  We were fortunate to be able to travel and gain experience against other athletes in our division,” said Coach Alan Taylor.

Competitors were led by Colby Mitchell, a sophomore from Burwell. Other Aggies were Kaden Bryant, Firth; Cooper Mazza, Harrisburg; Trey Barnhart and Kamren Sitzman, both of McCook.
